There’s nothing like the sweetness of biting into a fresh strawberry. Even though strawberry season is getting a later start this year (thanks, cold weather), local bakeries and cafes have already (or are about to) roll out our favorite strawberry dessert in Durham. See the list below for four spots to check out while strawberries are in season!
Locopops
Locopops carries strawberries & cream and strawberry lemonade pops year-round, but seasonally, they have even more varieties, including strawberry rhubarb, strawberry pineapple, and a strawberry balsamic sorbet. During local strawberry season, they have a special strawberries & cream pop, which is made from the prettiest berries, sliced thin and placed into pop molds with fresh cream poured over them.
For pie, which Locopops started offering in their new shop, they often feature strawberry icebox pie with a pretzel crust.
And we can’t wait to try strawberry malted milkshakes once they get the shake machine installed!
Monuts
Monuts gets local strawberries from Lyon Farms and LilFarm to create one of my all-time favorite donuts: strawberry shortcake, with strawberry glaze, whipped cream and a fresh berry on top. Of course, other strawberry varieties are available seasonally and the menu changes often.
The Parlour
We can’t wait for strawberry ice cream to come back to The Parlour’s menu in May! Mad props to the owners and team, who, for the past two years, have picked their own berries from Waller Family Farm.
This year, the owners are also going to try to replicate a strawberry biscuit they remember fondly from New Orleans (sweet buttermilk biscuits sliced in half and filled with mascarpone and Louisiana strawberries). They may only be sold on Saturdays though, so be ready.
Rose’s
Rose’s, who gets their berries though Eastern Carolina Organics, Durham Farmer’s Market, and a little strawberry picking of their own, recently started making a strawberry cream cake (sponge cake filled with a strawberry pastry cream, topped with strawberry buttercream and jam).
They’ll also have layered cakes like almond or pistachio with creme fraiche and strawberries; strawberry macarons of different varieties; strawberry thumbprints; strawberry mochi cake, and strawberry rhubarb galettes. And, of course, ice cream! They always process and freeze enough puree to last all summer since the season is so short.
The strawberry ice cream & strawberry sorbet ice cream sandwich will still go down as one of my all time favorite desserts.
Leave a comment with some of your favorite strawberry sweets in the Triangle!
