Over the next few weeks, another establishment is set to open in One City Center. As the owners describe, “The Oak House is not a coffee shop that serves drinks and it is not a bar that serves coffee–it’s a high-end craft beverage lounge with something for everyone.” Perhaps that is on your way to work for a hand-crafted latte, sipping an afternoon tea, grabbing a beer on your way home, or having a night cap with friends–there are many reasons to visit at different times of the day.In 2014, Phil Smith (an Elon staff member) and Ryan Vet (an Elon alum) got together to launch their first location of The Oak House across from Elon University, which is about a 45-minute drive from Durham. Their goal was to create a space for people to build community around craft beverages in a warm and inviting atmosphere. After an overwhelming success in Elon, Phil and Ryan wanted to bring The Oak House to the Bull City!Phil is originally from Durham and Ryan recently moved here. “We both love the city and wanted to bring this space to the heart of Downtown Durham,” they share. “We desired a location that was accessible to both residences and businesses and was within walking distance to DPAC and DBAP.”
They love partnering with local businesses and will offer locally-sourced pastries and snack as well as cheese boards and other charcuterie, but they also welcome guests to bring in snacks and food from nearby restaurants to enjoy with their favorite Oak House beverages.
Oak House will feature gourmet coffee roasted on site by Durham-based Caballo Rojo (which was the very first pop up at American Tobacco, and is a frequent vendor at the Durham Farmers’ Market), along with tea, craft beer, cider and fine wine. Later in 2019, they plan to also add whiskey to the menu.
Fun events are also in store, such as coffee roasting demonstrations and cuppings; wine and beer tastings, and live music. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming wood tones contrasted with dark colors and modern light fixtures. There will be a bar, couches for lounging, and long tables to meet up with groups. And if you want to learn more about the backstory of any of their products, the Oak House team is equipped and knowledgeable to help educate and find the perfect match to suit your taste.
The Oak House looks to open later this month (June, 2019).
