At the start of the year, we told you about a produce delivery service that cuts down on food waste, rescuing slightly off-size, off-color, “ugly,” and overproduced fruits and veggies. Since then, we have been subscribing to Hungry Harvest’s weekly deliveries and saving trips to the grocery store…not to mention a little extra cash (the cost is 20-40% less than store prices).
And now that Hungry Harvest has grown and gained more partnerships with organic farmers in North Carolina, they recently announced a brand new option: Organic rescued produce! It was a natural next step as they’ve been working with an increasing number of organic farms in North Carolina for the conventional boxes and there has been an overall increasing demand for organic options. This is great news for people like me who try to get organic when possible and affordable.
“With over 1.2 million tons of food going to waste in North Carolina each year, we typically put a higher premium on fighting food waste over how it is grown, when we source our produce. Through our relationships with a network of local farms, we’re happy to be able to give our subscribers the chance to not only make an impact, but also eat organically,” shares CEO, Evan Lutz.”
Just like the regular boxes, there are a few different sizes from which to choose, starting with the mini for $24, which we find sufficient for our family of two adults and one child.
There is a good variety in every box and it changes weekly, which is part of the fun and forces us to come up with different ways to utilize what’s available. This week, there was a giant head of lettuce, celery, a bundle of spinach and broccoli, acorn squash, blueberries, a bag of apples, a few peppers and cucumbers.
We got started cooking the moment our first organic box arrived and made fluffy omelettes with eggs and cheese from the Durham Co-op and organic spinach and peppers from the box.New and existing Hungry Harvest customers who are interested in trying out an organic box can enjoy $5.00 off their first organic order with promo code: ORGANICNC
Plus, one lucky reader will get to WIN a free Hungry Harvest organic sample box. Earn up to four entries by October 8th!
