Beer Study, a bottle shop that originated in Chapel Hill, is making headway opening their second location, in you guessed it, the Bull City!
Owner JD Schlick says they have been looking for about two years for a Durham space. They orginally wanted to open up as a joint venture with Baxter’s Arcade, Al’s Burger Shack (both in Chapel Hill), and Starpoint Brewing in the Graham Street block in Durham, but that space fell through. Luckily, that didn’t deter the bottle shop owner who eventually found a spot in what I like to refer to as the little “food island” of Rockwood Shopping Center on University Drive (across the street from NuvoTaco and Q Shack). In fact, for food, the bottle shop plans to feature menus from the surrounding restaurants and possibly do brunch with food trucks on weekends.
If you’ve been to the Chapel Hill Beer Study, you’ll notice the Durham location is much bigger, partly because they have Starpoint Brewing running out of the back. “We liked the idea of being a brewery taproom/bottleshop,” says JD. “It will be laid back just like Chapel Hill, but nicer all around.” It will also have an event space and small arcade in the back, so it will be easier for bottle shares and releases.
The collaboration with Starpoint, a Carrboro-based brewery, was a natural fit. The two businesses have known each other and worked together for years. The shop will have 8-10 taps from Starpoint at all times. The rundown of options will include 10 taps from Starpoint, two wines on tap, and 28 beers that they choose to showcase.
Construction at the site will be wrapping up over the next couple weeks and a grand opening is planned for late February 2017. Regular hours are still being discussed, but will likely be from about 10am-10pm with later hours on Friday and Saturdays nights.
