A couple weeks ago, Bites of Bull City featured a pre-opening Q&A with Lucky’s Deli, coming to downtown Durhamt this spring. Lucky’s isn’t the only new restaurant in the works for the folks behind Mateo Bar de Tapas: Mothers and Sons Italian Trattoria is bracing for a spring opening as well, and rolling out pounds of handmade pasta in preparation!
Matt Kelly and Josh DeCarolis opened Mateo together in 2012, and once things settled down (if you could call it that), they started to do some brainstorming. It’s always been a dream of DeCarolis’ to have a traditional trattoria – he was just waiting for the right opportunity. They had their eyes on a few different locations, but in the end, what they were looking for was right under their nose…or more accurately, next door. The new restaurant will open at 107 W. Main Street.
The restaurant will be using all fresh pasta. “A variety will be made using a method called ‘fatto a mano,'” DeCarolis explains. “That literally translates to ‘made by hand,’ so it will be mixed by hand and rolled or formed by hand using no machines and only traditional methods.” The pastas will showcase Italian flavors and techniques as well as highlight local and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant will also have a wood-fired hearth with a rotisserie upon which they’ll be cooking many different types of foods, including lots of vegetables, whole fish, chicken, as well as porchetta nightly.
While construction on the space is full speed ahead in a rush to come to a finish, the final outcome aims to be warm and inviting – it’s hard not to with a wood burning hearth as the focal point. In true Italian style, they aim to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere where guests leave both full and fulfilled. Mothers & Sons will serve only dinner to start with and Sunday brunch to follow soon after.
Stay tuned for more updates from Bites of Bull City and learn more about their sister restaurant Lucky’s Deli, which will open around the same (and in the same area).
