Plenty of kids are picky eaters and will turn their nose up at a pile of vegetables on a plate, but have you ever seen some of those same children suddenly go wild for produce they pick themselves at a farm, garden, or even at the market? A child who grows or harvests his or her own vegetables is much more likely to eat them! That’s why bridging the gap between growing, cooking and eating is so important, and why Durham nonprofit SEEDS does significant work to help.
Located in the heart of downtown Durham, SEEDS is a hands-on garden school where children and families can dig in (literally) to the practices of organic growing, healthy cooking, and eating. The programs SEEDS offers teach kids where food comes from, and in doing so, empowers and inspires them to grow and prep it themselves, becoming more self-sufficient, healthy and productive citizens.
SEEDS big annual fundraising event is the Harvest Dinner, taking place Thursday, September 22, 2016. The Harvest Dinner is a fall feast of celebrated local chefs coming together at Durham Central Park to feed people an unforgettable meal – and it’s a dream come true for foodies! Chefs and vendors in this year’s line-up include Lucky’s Deli, Picnic, Dashi, East Durham Pie Co., Durham Distillery, Bull City Ciderworks and Fullsteam to name a few.
Mingle and make your way though each delicious station at this fun and social evening event as you enjoy musical entertainment, great company and incredible food from our region.
Your ticket supports this vibrant non-profit that works hard to enrich our lives with sustainable food practices and to pass that on to the next generation. (While tickets are usually $100 or more, this year, you can make a $20 donation and be entered in a raffle to WIN a pair of tickets to the event.)
We can’t wait to attend this exciting culinary event in support of a great cause – we look forward to seeing you there!
