Featured Event of the Month
When you think of North Carolina food, peppers may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but this year’s PepperFest could change that.
PepperFest, now in its tenth year, is a festival celebrating NC peppers and their September harvest, while also applauding local food and artisans. The 10th Annual event will be held at the Great Meadow in Briar Chapel, Chapel Hill on Sunday, September 24, 2017. (Scroll down for a chance to win a pair of tickets!)The event will feature 1,000 pounds of Chatham County peppers (yes, 1,000 pounds!) prepared by over 40 of the best chefs, artisan food makers and brewers/distillers in the area, including Durham’s Lucky’s Deli, Watt’s Grocery, Counting House, Durham Toffee, The Mad Popper, and many more!
What might surprise you is the incredible variety of dishes presented at the festival; opening your eyes to the variety of peppers grown in this state and the different ways they can be incorporated into dishes: From mild rice and chicken medleys to spicy seafood fritters. The creative culinary talent of the local chefs shines through and each booth (of which there are over 50) provides a unique experience. The flavors range from sweet to hot, but don’t worry, the chefs are good about giving a fair warning and there are local breweries and beverage providers to help quench your thirst if you indulge in anything with a kick.
Attendees are also treated to the sounds local music by The Piedmont Regulators & Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys while learning about food sustainability and local farms. The day even includes a kids cooking contest, kids workshops, face painting, and giant bubbles, so feel free to bring the entire family! The festival is hosted by Abundance NC, an organization based in the Piedmont that aims to promote sustainability and local economy in North Carolina. They work with local farmers and community members to host DIY sustainability workshops, Bikes and Barnyards Summer Camp, conferences of environmental and cultural topics, and, of course, community events like PepperFest.
What could be better than a perfect autumn afternoon listening to local bluegrass and indie tunes, sipping a cold pepper beer and savoring the fresh flavor of local peppers? Yeah, you better go dust off those lawn chairs.
As if this event couldn’t get any better, it’s also becoming more waste-free every year – almost everything will be composted or recycled. So you’re not just having a great time learning about sustainability, you’re living it too!
One lucky reader will win a pair of tickets to this year’s festival. Earn up to five entries by completing the steps below. A winner will be chosen August 13th.
