Last winter, Bites of Bull City was thrilled to break the news that a London-style gastropub would be opening in the Bull City…and the wait is finally over.
Viceroy, run by the owners of Bull McCabe’s and the Tan-Durm food truck, is now open and serving up authentic Indian dishes and British comfort food in downtown Durham.
Located in the former Beyu Caffe space (which moved a couple doors down), the interior is eclectic and warm with plenty of old world charm.
Tables start off with colorful house-made papdi – little rice cakes that are oddly addicting, and I personally don’t think you should skip an order of garlic naan.
Indian food was a big void in downtown Durham and I’m happy to see it filter in through Viceroy. Taking a peek at the menu, you’ll notice a great fusion of Indian-British delights like paneer, lamb with mashed potato, curried shepherd’s pie, and mykanwala (masala). Seasonal specials, not listed on the menu, will be introduced from the kitchen soon.
You’ll love the vibe in Viceroy, not to mention the sensational smell of spices coming from the kitchen. The bar and restaurant will soon be open late night, and will become the official spot to watch Manchester United games.
I love that this little part of downtown is quickly becoming a hot spot for dining both day and night with the introduction of several new restaurants on this one street alone in just a year. We’re happy to see delicious Indian dishes join the ranks.

Menu recommendation: The combination of the Siam Salad and Gobi Suka is great those two small plates really complement each other.
